The Emergency Care in Sport course covers essential topics specifically focused on the care of athletes within the sporting environment. It emphasises the recognition and field-side management of sick or injured athletes, equipping participants with practical skills through the use of various training aids and realistic simulations. This hands-on approach ensures that healthcare professionals are prepared to respond effectively and confidently in emergency situations during sporting events.

What you’ll learn

  • Systematic approach and initial assessment of the injured athlete

  • Neurological emergencies, including head injury and concussion

  • Spinal and neck trauma, including immobilisation devices, back board and scoop stretcher use

  • Chest, abdominal, and pelvic trauma

  • Musculoskeletal trauma and management

  • Common medical emergencies effecting athletes

  • Immediate pain management

  • Emergency Life Support, including:

    • CPR

    • Airway management and associated adjuncts

    • Effective ventilation using a bag-valve mask (BVM)

    • Defibrillation

Pre-Course Requirements

One day intensive mode:
Complete an online pre-course learning activities and assessment before attending the one-day intensive workshop.

Two-day extended mode:
Complete the online pre-course learning activities and assessments for HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid before attending the two-day extended workshop.
