What you’ll learn

A course that builds on foundational skills and knowledge to deliver advanced resuscitation and oxygen therapy, with a strong focus on the sporting context.

  • Recognition and initial management cardiac arrest in adult, youth and paediatric populations

  • Effective CPR

  • Safe AED use

  • Patient ventilation using Bag Valve Mask (BVM)

  • Airway management including oropharyngeal airways

  • Safe use and delivery of oxygen in an emergency.

  • Incident communication

Pre-Course Requirements

HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid (Pre-requisite)

Complete online pre-course work and assessment before attending the practical session.

Entry Requirements

  • Participants must have the physical capacity to perform the practical demonstrations, such as 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on the floor and performing rescue breathing techniques on manikins.

    Online study:  Students must have access to a computer, smartphone, tablet or other electronic devices with access to the internet to complete the online/ pre-course studies.

    This course has a pre-requisite of HLTAID011 Provide First Aid which much be completed prior to undertaking this unit of competency. 

    PLEASE NOTE: HLTAID003 Provide first aid is not equivalent to HLTAID011 Provide First Aid and can therefore not be used as a substitute for the pre-requisite requirement.

Assessment Requirements

  • Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks.

Certificate Renewal Requirements

  • This certificate has an industry recommended renewal period of 12 months

Assessment Activities

  • Performance tasks and practical scenarios:

    • Perform CPR on an adult (incl. the use of bag-valve-masks, oxygen equipment, an AED and placing the casualty into the recovery position)

    • Perform CPR on an infant

    • Manage a casualty with a life-threatening bleed and provide oxygen 

    • Complete an incident report

    • Maintain resuscitation equipment

  • Theory assessment: A written assessment consisting of multiple-choice questions.
